Authorised Entry Only explores what happens when children are given authorship not only over stories but over the spaces in which those stories live. Over two weeks, young participants will work with writers and artists to imagine, design, and build an immersive storytelling environment where writing becomes something physical, spatial, and performative. In this project the young participants are not simply contributors but the artistic authors of the work. Professional artists act as collaborators and guides, helping participants develop and realise their ideas, but the stories, environments and creative decisions emerge from the imagination of the group itself.

The project begins with a simple provocation:

What would it feel like to step inside a child’s imagination?

The Children’s Democratic Republic of Bridport was a children’s creative writing project that ran for two intensive weeks in the summer from 29th July August 2024. It took place in Bridport and  the Project involved a group of 23 nine to fourteen-year-olds and was designed to get them thinking about how you go about creating a country and how those countries choose to govern and conduct themselves. The intended outcomes were to produce everything we felt was necessary for a new country to have (laws, manifesto, transport system, education system, national anthem/sport/dish, flag etc. etc). We would then get these professionally produced and use them to furnish and display in our new embassy which would be open to the public for a number of weekends.
