Out on a limb: TREe-mendous survival advice from Mountjoy students

Things were getting serious for the Bank Manager when we arrived at Mountjoy School to work with Hazel Class. We had a survival guide to write, and as ever, the Bank Manager had managed to get themselves into a bit of a pickle. In attempting to rescue a cat from a tree, they had only gone and got themselves stuck up there! Fortunately, Hazel Class were on hand to help us tackle whatever disaster had befallen him!

The first challenge was to put together a set of clear instructions to get the Bank Manager out of trouble. It’s all very well having a brilliant idea, but if you can’t explain it clearly enough for someone as daft as the Bank Manager to follow, you might find yourself in an even bigger mess. Hazel Class rose to the challenge, working together to come up with a plan that could save the day. The class used a passing balloon to pass on messages and a flock of sheep as a makeshift trampoline. Ingenious!

With the Bank Manager’s rescue operation underway, it was time to turn our attention to some survival situations of our own. And that’s where things really got interesting! After all, a survival guide can cover just about anything, from how to get out of a swimming pool, to how to eat in bed without covering the sheets in crumbs; the only limit was the students’ imaginations!

We were joined by the wonderful illustrator Lucy Wooler, who helped bring the children’s instructions to life with her fantastic illustrations. It’s amazing how much easier it is to follow a set of instructions when you have a brilliant set of pictures to go with them. You can find out more about Lucy’s work here.

As ever, our Marvellous Mentors were on hand to support the children throughout the workshop, so a huge thank you to Lizzie and Ambs for all their help. We’d also like to say a massive thank you to Mr Page and all the staff at Mountjoy School, and to Stacey Sellick for helping make the workshop happen. Another brilliant day of imagination, problem-solving and survival skills!
